Horses Helping Heroes Project
Proudly Serving Veterans Facing Challenges
We are a PATH International (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, International) member center and bring together a team of skilled horses and a group of dedicated, fully-trained volunteers to teach the foundations of horsemanship and equine behavior. We also offer opportunities to work on an Equisizer to improve physical condition.
All participants are assigned a horse to work with over the course of an 8 week session. During each class, the veteran learns more about their horse, has opportunities to bond with the animal and is presented with progressively more challenging tasks to accomplish with their horse. Lunch is served at each class providing an opportunity for our participants, mentors and volunteers to socialize.
In addition to classes, we have an Outreach Program that provides services to military families and veterans who cannot attend classes. This program includes the Hampton VA Medical Center and the Fisher House at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. The VA enjoys multiple barn days for veterans from the CLC unit and the Spinal Cord Injury Unit as well as an annual Christmas event called “Decorate Your Room for the Holidays”. We provide a version of this same December event for the Fisher House as well as “Christmas in July” where we restock the pantry and freezer and provide home cooked meals for guests.
All of our services are provided at NO COST.
