The HORSES HELPING HEROES PROJECT classes are held at a private facility that is not open to the general public. This allows our participants an opportunity to work in a quiet and completely private setting with assistance from fully-trained volunteers and fellow veterans from our Mentor Program.

Each incoming veteran is assigned a horse on the first day of class and will work with that horse for the remainder of the session. Participants learn how to safely work around the horse, groom their horse, and work as a team to accomplish progressively more challenging tasks with their horse. Each class begins with a brief lecture or presentation that provides the participant with a variety of information about their horse such as: how to communicate with their horse; how to recognize what their horse is trying to tell them; and, how various parts of the body function. Participants then have an opportunity to practice what they have just learned in a private ground work lesson with their horse.

We also offer our participants an opportunity to obtain a 3- level Horsemanship Achievement Certification from the Therapeutic Riding Association of Virginia. This certification acknowledges the participant's mastery of the topics and tasks associated with each of the levels.

Lunch is served at each class and we do eat well!! During lunch the participants have an opportunity to socialize with other veterans in the program and to provide valuable feedback to the staff and volunteers about that day's class.

Participation in our classes is on a first come, first serve basis. For a schedule of classes, please see our Calendar page.

If you are, or know of, a military or first-responder veteran who might benefit from participation in our program, please contact us for enrollment forms or download them here.

Once we receive the completed forms, we will work with the veteran to establish short- term objectives, long-term goals, and the strategies needed to successfully achieve these goals and objectives.
